SUNBURY, Pa. – April 15, 2017 – PRLog — Lawrence Knorr’s Wonder Boy – The Story of Carl Scheib: The Youngest Player in American League History has been released by Sunbury Press in paperback and ebook.

About the Book:
Carl Scheib, from Gratz, PA, was a young farm boy of 16 who was signed to a major league contract by Connie Mack of the Philadelphia Athletics. Carl enjoyed 11 years in the major leagues, interrupted by his service in World War II. When he made his first appearance in 1943, he was the youngest player in modern major league history. The following season, Joe Nuxhall of the National League’s Cincinnati Reds, pitched 2/3 of an inning at age 15, breaking Carl’s major league record, but Carl retained his American League record.

Known as a good-hitting pitcher, Carl hit .396 in 1951 and .298 in 1948. He hit five home runs in his career, including a grand slam.

As a pitcher, Carl was a key hurler on the 1948 Philadelphia Athletics, going 14-8 during a tight pennant race. He also went 11-7 in 1952, and saved 11 games in 1951. Behind his “pitch- to-contact” approach, the A’s set the all-time record for double plays in a season with 217 in 1949, a record that still stands.

Wonder Boy chronicles the rapid raise of Carl Scheib from his high school days at Gratz and his contributions to Dalmatia in the West Branch League, to his subsequent major league career, facing such players as Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Ted Williams, Yogi Berra, Bobby Doerr, Satchel Paige, Bob Lemon, Larry Doby, Bob Feller, Luke Appling, Early Wynn, Mickey Mantle and many more.

About the Author:
Lawrence Knorr is an amateur historian with deep roots in the Pennsylvania Dutch Region. Lawrence has had a long career in information technology. He is the co-owner of Sunbury Press, Inc. and an adjunct Professor of Economics at Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA. 2nd volume of Lykens Township History is now available

GRATZ, Pa. — Sunbury Press has released History of Lykens Township Volume 2, compiled by the Gratz Historical Society.

About the Book:
Lykens Township is perhaps the largest township in Dauphin County. It borders Mifflin Township on the west, Northumberland County on the north, Schuylkill County on the east, and Short Mountain on the south.

The history of the area as related in Volume Two, begins slightly west of the point where Route 25 meets North Crossroads, at the western edge where Lykens and Mifflin Township meet. North Crossroads runs from Spain, which lies a short distance beyond, and is also part of Lykens Township. From this point the history details the remaining eastward part of the township.

Although there has been some population growth, Lykens Township has remained primarily a rural farming community, retaining its timeless character.

There are histories and many photographs, as well as other information  for each of the early homes and families. Also of country schools, the churches, and other historic landmarks.

The book contains a table of contents, also an index to genealogies, in addition to the index of individual names found in the book.

April 27, 2006
My teeth gripped the steering wheel tight in a state of shock. The indents from each tooth forever etched into the steering wheel. I stared straight ahead, out the windshield. I was frozen in fear, physically unable to move. I just watched the horror unfolding in the headlights directly in front of me. I looked on in stupefaction. “Is this really happening?” I wondered. “Am I dreaming?” It was almost like a movie, except it was much more vivid and way more terrifying than any movie could ever be. This was very real, no pause button, no rewind. Frightened, I just kept watching. I felt my body go numb, I couldn’t think, couldn’t speak, couldn’t move.

There was blood everywhere. I could see that his chest was still moving up and down trying to breathe. I could hear his lungs still gasping for air. Then they made an eerily gurgling sound as they filled with blood. It poured out of the bullet holes and his orifices like a faucet.

How did I get here? I should be at home watching TV with Memom. How had my entire “normal” life led to this point? Had it all been dark and I just hadn’t realized? A dark road, down a dark path, leading to this dark end.

That happy-go-lucky, short, petite-build, bleach-blonde, curly headed, smiling, singing, praying, innocent child that I had once been so long ago. At that moment, though, I wasn’t thinking of that. I couldn’t think, couldn’t speak, couldn’t move.

About the Author:
Christina Burns was born August 22, 1985 in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Upon graduating from PSU, Christina was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree, in addition to, a Certificate of Chemical Dependency and Preventions Counseling. She went on to attain many personal and professional achievements. Surrounded by “surreal blessings” every step of the way. At one point, she even sat in the same chair as her counselor had years prior, this time counseling someone else sitting in the place she once was.

Following graduation, Christina worked as a Case Manager/Counselor at a residential facility for homeless veterans. She was then hired privately to design, develop, and facilitate as the CEO of a non profit faith-based organization. Creating a 19 bed residential facility offering a wide variety of services to include a holistic approach to life recovery, was an exciting experience in her career. Going on to work as a counselor at a residential rehabilitation facility and specializing in mental health, behavioral health, and drug and alcohol, is perhaps her most favorite of all professional accomplishments.

Christina loves being a mommy, helping others, and all things outdoors. From working on mechanics to wearing high heels, she is magnificently well rounded and down to earth! As a true free spirit, Christina enjoys kayaking, mudding in her lifted ’77 Chevy truck, riding dirt bikes and four-wheelers, fishing, sleeping under the stars, museums, amusement parks, dancing, traveling, furthering her education, reading, motivational speaking, thinking, and more- as long as it involves spending time with her son!

Discovering true love and happiness in her child, the answers to life’s questions in her education, and fulfillment in her career, Christina finally found her serenity.

Fifty years of research to make “Cast Iron Signs of Pennsylvania Towns and Other Landmarks.”

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. — Sunbury Press has released Cast Iron Signs of Pennsylvania Towns and Other Landmarks, N. Clair Clawser’s compilation of early roadside markers in the Keystone state.

About the Book:
Author and field researcher N. Clair Clawser has spent over 50 years traveling the highways and thoroughfares of Pennsylvania to capture images of the cast iron road signs placed there in the early days of automobiles. Many of these signs are long gone, but quite a few remain and have been restored.

Pennsylvania is unique with this type of town sign, which could become a thing of the past. (New York State has many cast iron signs, too, but they are on many subjects and not necessarily on town names.) Almost from the start Clair noticed some of these signs were being removed, even as he discovered that many still remained. Originally cast from about 1929 until 1942, these signs were made largely in either the Carlisle Foundry in Carlisle or Geiser Manufacturing Company in Waynesboro. Both companies are long out of business. There are a small number that were produced elsewhere, but not many. (Allegheny Foundry.) Jack Graham of the Keystone Markers Trust stated that the Department of Highways report for 1928-1930 said, “During the biennium 1,359 information signs were placed including historical, stream, state institution, speed limit and parking restriction signs.”

Many of these signs endure to this day, but are in constant danger of removal. A few new ones have been posted, but many more should be. The aforementioned report does not say how many were town signs. If the total was all towns and divided by 4 that would only be 339 towns. There are numerous stream signs still in existence today. These are 2-sided with just the name. Town signs are one-sided. We can only imagine that each town that had a cast iron sign may have had 4, one for each direction. Very few towns, that still have a sign, have more than two today. Hanover, a rarity, has six. Gettysburg has 4, as does Jonestown. York New Salem has 3, as does Lemoyne. Rothsville had 4, but one was removed. Schoeneck has 4 new ones installed by the Keystone Markers Trust, and Mountville has 3.

Signs from 67 Pennsylvania counties are listed, including the known contents each sign. Pictures are shown where available.

Mark Singel recalls the fast-paced events of 1993 in new memoir

HARRISBURG, Pa.  — Sunbury Press has released A Year of Change and Consequences, former acting Governor Mark SIngel’s recollection of the events of 1993.

About the Book:
Mark Singel, a Johnstown native and Penn State graduate, won election as Lieutenant Governor in 1986 as Robert Casey’s running mate. In 1993, Governor Casey was stricken with Appalachian familial amyloidosis, a rare and usually fatal liver disorder. The governor required a multiple organ transplant, which was still experimental at that time. While the governor was incapacitated and recovering, Mark Singel became the acting Governor of Pennsylvania. This book is Mark Singel’s recollection of the events that year.

About the Author:
Mark Singel served as Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania from 1987 through 1995 and, for a period of time, Acting Governor of the Commonwealth. The only person in Pennsylvania history to serve an extended time as Acting Governor, Singel received high marks for his stewardship. He led the state by enacting the first modern workers’ compensation reform package, refinanced the state’s park system through the “Key 93” program, and helped launch the high-tech era with landmark telecommunications legislation. He was also instrumental in reducing state and local taxes, the implementation of a statewide 911 emergency phone system, and the creation of thousands of new jobs in recycling and environmental technologies. He was the original author of the state’s mortgage assistance bill that has saved 50,000 Pennsylvania homes.

Prior to his terms as Lieutenant Governor, Singel served six years in the Pennsylvania State Senate and was chief of staff to two members of the U.S. Congress.

Singel ran for U.S. Senate in 1992 and for Governor in 1994. He served as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party from 1995-1998 and was the President of Pennsylvania’s Electoral College in January, 1997. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention five times from 1992 through 2016.

Singel founded The Winter Group in February, 2005 and has developed it into one of the most effective and prestigious government relations firms in the state. He continues to provide consulting services to clients in retail, hospitality and gaming, manufacturing, technology, energy, non-profits, and health care fields. Recent successes include a ban on public smoking, legislation to address child sexual abuse, and consumer protection in health care settings.

Singel served as Chair of Pennsylvanians for Judicial Reform which was instrumental in bringing talented, progressive jurists to the state’s Supreme Court.

Singel has served in various capacities with Pennsylvania’s governors and decision-makers and maintains strong personal and political ties with leaders at all levels today.

A magna cum laude graduate of Penn State, Singel continues to teach at the Harrisburg campus and other universities. He has served on the Boards of Penn State and St. Francis Universities and holds several honorary doctorate degrees. Excerpt:
Angela awoke that day as she did most others: to the smell of freshly brewed coffee. Still in bed, she smiled to herself, completely contented by thoughts of what had happened two months previously. Faith could breathe more easily now; she finally knew that her mother had loved her, and thanks to her grandfather’s copper penny, she was more financially secure than Angela imagined she’d ever been. “I wonder what she’s doing now,” Angela thought to herself with a smile.

Then, rising from bed, she walked over to the window and peered outside. The morning was just being born, and the stars were just starting to hide themselves behind the sun’s rays. As she took in the scenery, thoughts of her grandmother Iana pushed against her temples and buried themselves in her mind. “You must be near . . . I can feel you,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Spinning around, she faced the dresser and stared at her grandmother’s Bible, which sat atop it, abruptly wondering to herself if any additional clues about Iana’s life were hiding in the lines of her illustrations.

Then Angela tightened the belt of her robe, approached the dresser, and picked up the Bible. She pressed her left hand against its leather cover and rubbed it slowly, thinking that maybe, just maybe, there were answers right beneath her fingertips.

After opening the book, she idly flipped through its pages until she made her way to the back-to the page she’d unsealed to find Maggie’s treasure. To be honest, she hadn’t perused the Bible all that much since January, and it felt new and almost revitalizing to revisit the book-and what it was capable of-after having had time to recover from the first adventure it led her on.

As Angela turned the unsealed page, she found that there was another page behind it, folded over from right to left and sealed toward the spine. And the current day’s date, March 17, 2006, declared itself above the fold in old ink. “It should be safe to open now,” Angela thought to herself, in awe of her splendid timing. So, nervously, she cracked the red seal, peeled the wax away from the page, opened the fold from left to right, and revealed a drawing of a winged insect.

Below the drawing a Bible passage from Exodus was written.

Exodus 10:12: And the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over Egypt so that locusts swarm over the land and devour everything growing in the fields, everything left by the hail.”

Puzzled and somewhat disturbed, Angela rubbed her index and middle fingers over the image. “This isn’t a locust,” she thought. “It’s a dragonfly.”

About the Authors:
Robin McClellan was born and raised in a small town outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Growing up in the world of science fiction and spirituality, at a young age he studied the Bible, meditation, lucid dreaming, self-hypnosis, and time travel. As Robin got older he turned his attention to the world of quantum physics, specifically subatomic particles and how they seem to co-exist with spirituality.
